Gaines lights up debut

Jon Gaines made a sensational first appearance in a Riders' shirt as he bagged a stunning 59 points in a 140-135 double-overtime win.

Riders faced NBL side Ware Rebels at the Stowmarket Slammers Invitational Tournament to highlight the launch of Active Sports in Suffolk.

Gaines had 35 points by the interval off 9-of-14 three-point shooting as Riders eased into a 67-55 lead.

Former Tower Rodney Alexander helped the Rebels back into the match and overtime beckoned when the sides were level at 114 at the end of regulation. Level again at 124 at the end of overtime, the game was finally blown opened in the second extra period

Gaines hit back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to put Riders 138-132 clear and on their way to victory.

In all Gaines was good for 12-of-26 three-point shooting and grabbed 12 boards, whilst Billy Singleton (26 pts, 15 rebs) and Ralph Blalock (25 pts, 11 ass) also posted double-doubles.

"It was great entertainment for the fans," said Coach Billy Mims. "Jon Gaines showed the Riders fans just what's he's capable of from behind the arc.

"Being our first friendly of the summer it was nice to pick off where we left off last season - with a win!"

Champions get season started

Nurishment Leicester Riders have the honour of tipping off the British basketball season as they bid to defend their BBL Championship crown.

The Riders travel to Birmingham on Thursday 27th September (7.00) for the season opener, with the rest of the BBL not starting until Saturday 29th.

Riders first home game of the season comes on opening Saturday when they play host to the Brighton Bears.

In the NTL National Cup, Riders begin their defence with a trip to the South Coast to take on NBL Conference side Worthing Thunder.

In the trophy, Riders are in a pool of seven alongside holders Chester, Thames Valley, London Leopards, Manchester, Derby and Brighton, with the top four progressing to the knock-out stage.
